Joanie Calem - musician, singer/song-writer and teacherJoanie has happily been teaching music, and facilitating family music programs, since 1983. She began her work as a piano teacher, using both conventional piano pedagogy methods and the Suzuki system. She soon realized that children's natural response to music was through their bodies, and that this innate movement is the easiest way for them to learn. When allowed to dance and create, they will learn the lyrics and the musical elements of any piece effortlessly. When asked to sit still they will fidget and direct their energy to trying to behave, thereby having less attention available to learn! After teaching Suzuki piano for 5 years, Joanie went back to music school to study the Dalcroze and Orff systems, both methods which encourage children to move and create and explore their own body rhythms while they are learning music. Her general approach is "child-led", i.e., creating programs drawn from children's natural interests and developmental stages. She lived in Israel for 22 years, and moved back to the states with her family in 1998. She continues to teach piano privately, to perform her children's music and movement programs, and to teach general music in a number of pre-schools and elementary/middle schools in the Columbus area. She also conducts programs on teaching Hebrew through music, and Jewish Holidays in song and dance. Students experience the joy of understanding an unfamiliar art form its origin, purpose and meaning, while relating it to their own experiences. Captivated by the beauty of the costumes, and the flow of the unique movements, and the distinctive language of gestures and facial expressions, children often enjoy exploring the usage of their hands and facial expressions to express their own ideas and emotions.
